Summary

The authors conducted a study to validate the short version of the Perinatal Grief Scale (SVPGS) in the Chinese population. The authors administered the SVPGS to 314 Chinese women who had experienced a recent miscarriage. The majority of the reproductive losses (84%) had occurred in the first trimester; third trimester losses represented only 4% of the sample. A confirmatory factory analysis was done to determine whether the results were consistent with the three SVPGS subscales: Active Grief, Difficulty Coping, and Despair. The results indicated that the data did not fit the original subscales; the authors then conducted an exploratory factor analysis that yielded three new subscales: Sense of Worthlessness, Social Detachment, and Painful Recollection.

Service Provider Implications

Service providers may benefit from being aware of the original SVPGS and the revised Chinese SVPGS and understanding that the construct of perinatal grief may vary based upon race and cultural influences.
