Summary

This article summarizes the results of a qualitative interview study to identify: 1) consensus views of professionals and volunteers involved in bereavement care and practice in Scotland, and 2) priorities for the development of local and national bereavement policies and services.  Nine key themes were identified through the analysis of 59 interviews with individuals involved in bereavement care.  Overall, the nine key themes focused on the deficiencies of the current or lack of bereavement policies and care, the need for coordinated, shared, better, and collaborative care, the need for promoting public awareness regarding the normalcy of bereavement, and the need for more professional education and training and care. The authors conclude with the argument that the needs could be accommodated with a central organization, the use of tiered models for care, and education supported by policy.
