Synopsis
For many years Bo’s Place has offered grief support groups in Spanish to better meet the needs of Houston’s growing Spanish-speaking population and also adjusted the English language programs to better meet the needs of the diverse population we serve. This online training is designed for professionals wanting to build their skills to support the Hispanic & Latino/a bereaved community more effectively. Participants will be able to interpret different ways grief/loss are defined in the Hispanic & Latino/a community, and will have a better understanding of specific cultural values that may impact the grief journey. Examples of culturally appropriate grief activities and group themes will also be provided. This session also provides an overview of how to support grieving individuals across the lifespan.
Objectives
1. Identify concepts to consider when offering culturally appropriate services to the Hispanic & Latino/a bereaved community.
2. Distinguish and discuss Hispanic & Latino/a cultural values that may impact the grief journey.
3. Describe the different ways grief and loss are defined and experienced in the Hispanic & Latino/a community.
